Shine city Awadh polo cup: Samrat crush Lancers in final

On the concluding day of the Shine city Awadh Polo Cup it was a brilliant display by the both teams but Samrat (RV Centre, Meerut) emerged out to be the winner of the tournament defeating Lancers (IMA, Dehradun) by 6-4.

The final day of the Awadh Polo Season 2014 saw thousands of spectators of Lucknow including families and children get a rare glimpse of horse polo along with other exciting adventurous events on 13 December 2014 at Surya Khel Parisar.

The Chief Guest on this occasion was Lt Gen GS Shergill, VSM**, Chief of Staff, HQ Central Command. The mega event commenced with the spectacular Band Display in which seven Pipe and Drum Bands and four Military Bands participated. Besides Polo, a spectacular fly past by para motors was displayed by the team from Army Adventure Para Motor Node. There was an excellent display of tent pegging and a motor cycle display by the Punjab Regimental Centre which formed part of other major attractions on the occasion.

Organized under the aegis of HQ Central Command, the Shine City Awadh Polo Cup Finals was played between India Military Academy Team from Dehradun (Lancers) and RVC Team from Meerut (Samrat). A full game of four chukkers with each chukker of  7 ½ minutes was played in which 40 horses were utilised. Both the team played an exceptional game of polo and displayed their extraordinary skills. Everyone present applauded the players for an excellent game of polo. Lancers was led by Maj Arjun Patil with a handicap of +1 and Samrat was led by a seasoned player Brig SS Kashayp with +2 handicap. The RVC Team from Meerut (Samrat) was the winner of Shine City Polo Cup with a score of 6-4.

In the end, Lt Gen G S Shergill gave away the prizes to the Umpires, Referee, Runners Up and Winners Team. Sponcers Shine city were also facilitated for their support in the tournament. He also felicitated other players who participated in the said tournament. Other senior Army Officers and their families were present on the occasion.

Chief Guest for today’s final concluding match was Chief of Staff, Central Command Lt Gen GS Shergill, VSM**.

Sunil Gavaskar gives his opinion of GT allrounder Rahul Tewatia

The left-handed batsman from Haryana is garnering praise from all quarters for the way he’s finishing games regularly in the most exciting IPL season.

Gavaskar reckons Tewatia’s whirlwind knock in Sharjah (in IPL 2020) where he smashed West Indies pacer Sheldon Cottrell for five sixes in an over, gave him the confidence that he belongs to the big stage.

Speaking on Cricket Live on Star Sports, Gavaskar said, “That assault on Sheldon Cottrell in Sharjah gave him the belief to do the impossible and the confidence that he belongs here. We saw the impossible (he did with the bat) the other day as well. There’s no twitching or touching the pads (which shows a batter’s nervousness) when he bats in the death overs. He just waits for the ball to be delivered and plays his shots. He’s got all the shots in the book, but most importantly his temperament to stay cool in a crisis is brilliant.”

Gavaskar has also nicknamed the 28-year-old cricketer the ‘ice-man’ and lauded Tewatia’s ability to remain unruffled during the tense moments.
