7 arrested in connection with school fire in Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur, Sep 17 (IANS) Seven teenage suspects were arrested in relation to the fire at a religious school that killed 23 people, mostly students, Malaysian police said.

Police on Saturday arrested the seven suspects, aged between 11 and 18, after obtaining surveillance videos from the neighbourhood, Kuala Lumpur police chief Amar Singh Ishar Singh told a press conference.

“Factor of mischief were found in the investigation,” Amar Singh said, “police successfully identified several individuals in the videos, and a total of seven were arrested,” Xinhua news agency quoted him as saying.

The suspects are believed to have quarrels with the residents at the religious school and might have started the fire in retribution, Amar Singh said, declining to provide more details on how it was committed.

All seven suspects were not attending schools, six tested positive to drugs while two have criminal records, he added.

A total of 21 students aged 6 to 17 and two teachers were killed in the early morning fire on Thursday near downtown Kuala Lumpur. Investigation by fire department showed that the fire was not started by short circuit as suspected earlier.

The fire shocked Malaysia, triggering calls to strengthen fire safety measures at religious schools across the country.

As many as six new nursing colleges to be functional in Haryana soon

Haryana Chief Secretary Sanjeev Kaushal shared that the construction work of six nursing colleges in the state will be completed soon and classes will commence in the month of July. Not only this, the new building of the National Institute of Fashion Technology, Panchkula has also completed its construction work.

Adding on to this, he shared that, till now, the classes are being held in another building, the chief secretary said while presiding over the review meeting of development projects worth more than Rs 100 crore here.

CHIEF SECRETARY REVIEWED MAJOR PROJECTS

The Chief Secretary reviewed several major projects, including power, health, medical, and technical education in the state, and directed the concerned officials to complete them within the stipulated time period.

COLLEGES UNDER CONSTRUCTION

He said that the construction of nursing colleges in Dherdu village of Kaithal, Khedi Ram Nagar village of Kurukshetra, Kheranwali village of Panchkula, Aura and Dayalpur village of Faridabad, and Sadatpur village of Rewari is under construction.

The construction work of Medical college in Koriawas in Narnaul, Medical College at Jind, Bhiwani, and Dental College at Nalhar is being completed at a fast pace. The work of the second phase of Kalpana Chawla Medical College is also undergoing.
