Mitchell Johnson out of fourth Boxing Day Test
Sydney: After failing to recover from hamstring soreness injury, Australia’s star pace bowler Mitchell Johnson has been excluded for the fourth Test against India starting here Tuesday.
Johnson did not train with his teammates Saturday and physiotherapist Alex Kountouris confirmed Sunday morning that the left-armer has not fully recovered from soreness in his right hamstring.
“Mitchell had some right hamstring soreness during the Boxing Day Test and we have been closely monitoring his recovery since that match but feel he has not fully recovered,” Kountouris said.
“As such, he will not play in the upcoming Sydney Test match. We expect him to recover in time to play a part in the upcoming Tri Series against England and India.”
Coach Darren Lehmann said there was no point risking Johnson and the lay-off would give him time to be fully fit for the tri-series involving India and England starting January 16, ahead of the World Cup next month.
“Mitchell is an important part of our plans for the remainder of our summer and we want him 100 percent right, so won’t be taking any risks with him. We believe it is best for Mitchell to take this opportunity to freshen up and get his body fully fit ahead of the Tri Series,” Lehmann said.

Sunil Gavaskar gives his opinion of GT allrounder Rahul Tewatia
The left-handed batsman from Haryana is garnering praise from all quarters for the way he’s finishing games regularly in the most exciting IPL season.
Gavaskar reckons Tewatia’s whirlwind knock in Sharjah (in IPL 2020) where he smashed West Indies pacer Sheldon Cottrell for five sixes in an over, gave him the confidence that he belongs to the big stage.
Speaking on Cricket Live on Star Sports, Gavaskar said, “That assault on Sheldon Cottrell in Sharjah gave him the belief to do the impossible and the confidence that he belongs here. We saw the impossible (he did with the bat) the other day as well. There’s no twitching or touching the pads (which shows a batter’s nervousness) when he bats in the death overs. He just waits for the ball to be delivered and plays his shots. He’s got all the shots in the book, but most importantly his temperament to stay cool in a crisis is brilliant.”
Gavaskar has also nicknamed the 28-year-old cricketer the ‘ice-man’ and lauded Tewatia’s ability to remain unruffled during the tense moments.
