Congress to work with like-minded parties in Lok Sabha polls: Sonia (Lead)
New Delhi, Feb 8 (IANS) Seeing “winds of change” after the Gujarat Assembly and Rajasthan by-elections, Congress leader Sonia Gandhi on Thursday said her party will work with like-minded parties to defeat the BJP in the next general elections which she felt could be held early.
She also expressed confidence that the party would retain power in the Karnataka Assembly elections.
“As for myself, as Chairperson of the Congress Parliamentary Party, I will work with the Congress President and other colleagues in discussions with like-minded political parties to ensure that in the next election the BJP is defeated and India is restored to a democratic, inclusive, secular, tolerant and economically progressive path,” Gandhi said addressing the Congress Parliamentary Party here.
Referring to the recent bye-elections in Rajasthan, which the party swept, and the Gujarat Assembly polls where it put up a creditable performance, Gandhi said: “We performed very creditably under tough circumstances in Gujarat and the (victories in the) just held by-elections in Rajasthan were huge. This shows that the winds of change are coming.
“I am sure that very soon the election results in Karnataka too will underline the resurgence of the Congress,” she added.
Extending her son Rahul Gandhi best wishes in his new role as the party chief and acknowledging that he was now also her boss, Gandhi said that the process of the party’s revival has started under Rahul Gandhi.
Sonia Gandhi hoped that the party workers and leaders would work with Rahul Gandhi with the same dedication as they did with her in her long tenure of 19 years.
“We have elected a new Congress President and on your behalf and on my own, I wish him all the very best. He is now my boss, too. Let there be no doubt about that – and I know that all of you will work with him with the same dedication, loyalty and enthusiasm as you did with me.
“I am confident that we will work cohesively under his leadership to revive our party’s fortunes. That process has begun,” she said.
Terming the 2014 electoral debacle of the party as an “aberration”, she called upon party workers to channelise the “discontent” among people against the Modi government.
“We have to be in a state of readiness for the national elections which are due in slightly over a year – and might well be called earlier as they were in 2004. No doubt 2014 was a severe setback, but I am convinced that it was an aberration.
“Increasingly, the people of our country, people belonging to all sections of our society, are getting disillusioned with the present regime. It is for us to channel this discontent into support (for the opposition),” she said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP have floated the idea of simultaneous elections to Lok Sabha and Assemblies and have called for a political consensus on the issue, setting off speculation that there could be early elections to Lok Sabha this year along with the Assembly polls in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh.
Gandhi called for building a positive and credible narrative against the Modi government.
“We have demonstrated our resilience before and we are now called upon to do so again. For this we must not only highlight the abject failures of the Modi government but more importantly, build a positive and credible narrative for ourselves on issues of public concern,” she said.

Lucknow: Vishal Singh, a renowned social worker from Lucknow, also known as Foodman, has once again made India proud. He was honored by the Happy Hands Gloves Cooperative Limited Company in Korathai, Thailand, for his work with the Hunger Free World Mission.
The Hunger Free World Mission’s meeting was held in Korathai, Thailand, under Vishal Singh’s leadership. Representatives from several countries, including Mr. Raja Dwivedi (Managing Director of Happy Hands Gloves Limited), Thailand Coordinator Mr. Raja Mishra, and member Mr. Varun Singh, attended the event.
Under Vishal Singh’s leadership, the attendees took a pledge to work together toward creating a hunger-free world.
Speaking on the occasion, Vishal Singh explained that the main goal of the Hunger Free World Mission is social participation. He said the mission is not just about feeding people but also about meeting other basic needs of those who are struggling. The mission focuses on helping families of terminally ill patients in hospitals by providing food and shelter. It also works to fulfill essential needs like education, jobs, and care for the elderly.
For the last 16 years, the Vijay Sri Foundation has been providing free services, benefiting thousands of people. Vishal Singh highlighted that the mission aims to gain global recognition like other organizations such as WHO, WWF, and Red Cross, which work for social causes.
During this meeting, Vishal Singh was appointed as the Chairman of the Hunger Free World Mission by representatives from various countries. They also discussed holding regular meetings in different countries to push the mission forward.
Business tycoon Dr. Abhishek Verma has also supported this humanitarian mission, vowing to promote the idea of “Seva Parmo Dharma” (Service is the highest duty) worldwide. Vishal Singh praised him, stating that people like Dr .Abhishek Verma inspire others to work for the betterment of society.
Recently, Romania’s Ambassador, Mr . Daniela Sezonov Ţane, invited Vishal Singh to the Romanian Embassy in Delhi, where they discussed the mission in detail. Impressed by his humanitarian work, she honored Vishal Singh and invited him to Romania to take the mission forward .
Food man Vishal Singh has been serving the people of India for the past 16 years. Through the Vijay Sri Foundation, he provides free meals to cancer patients & their families ,shelter, and education for women & children along with running free old-age homes in Lucknow.
In addition to his humanitarian work, Vishal Singh also addresses issues like crime and corruption through his role as Chairman of Seva Path Media and Managing Director of Vijay Sri Foundation.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Vishal Singh and his team worked tirelessly to provide food and help to the needy, including starving children, elderly citizens, and pregnant women. Despite contracting the virus himself, he continued to assist others after his recovery. He even created a life-saving oxygen regulator using household items, which was praised by doctors both in India and abroad.
In his address at the meeting, Vishal Singh spoke about his mission to create a hunger-free world. He pointed out that India’s large population, along with issues like unemployment and poverty, has caused the country to fall on the Hunger Index. He urged people to contribute just one handful of grains daily to help create a hunger-free world.
He concluded by saying that through social participation, we can empower the people around us, meet their basic needs, and work together to build a stronger, more prosperous, and developed society.
