Maruti Gypsy, the iconic off-roader is said to be discontinued soon. According to carandbike, bookings for the Gypsy will stop from December with the model officially being phased out in March 2019.

Maruti Suzuki first introduced the Gypsy in 1985. The off-roader has remained the same ever since with hardly any major changes to its design. The phase-out of the Gypsy in March 2019 will officially end the off-roaders 34-year production run. The Gypsy was the third model from Maruti Suzuki in India after the 800 hatchback and the Omni van. Both of which have now been phased out.

Bookings for a brand-new Gypsy will be open till the end of December. This gives Gypsy enthusiasts a final chance of purchasing a brand new model. The Maruti Gypsy is priced at Rs 6.4 lakh, ex-showroom. Maruti Suzuki dealerships also insist on full payment, as the Gypsy is built on a made-to-order process.

Popular brand of Maruti Suzuki to be stopped from its production in coming December:

The Maruti Gypsy comes with a 1.3-litre petrol engine producing 80bhp and 104Nm of torque. Power is sent to the rear wheels while a part-time four-wheel-drive system is also available as standard. The four-wheel-drive transfer case further offers low and high ratios, allowing the car to make light work of any terrain.

The Gypsy is built on a ladder-frame chassis and comes with the option of either a hard or canvas soft top from the factory. One of the main reason for the stop in production of the Gypsy is the new safety regulations coming into effect from April 2019, mandating the need for ABS and airbags.

The Maruti Gypsy has been on sale in India, for over 33 years now. The car has been nicknamed ‘the mountain goat’ for its extreme off-roading capabilities and reliability. However, with the phase-out of the Gypsy in March 2019, it will be interesting to see if Suzuki bring a replacement to the iconic off-roader. The Suzuki Jimny perhaps?
