Rio must reach new level: IOC

Rio de Janeiro: The International Olympic Committee has asked Rio de Janeiro to step up preparations to a new level to ensure the city is ready for the 2016 Games.

The comments coincide with concerns about the progress of construction work at some venues and delays to a planned new metro line, reported Xinhua.

Speaking during a visit to facilities Wednesday, the IOC’s coordination commission chairperson Nawal El Moutawakel said the coming months were crucial for preparations.

“Sites like the golf course, the velodrome and the equestrian cross-country have very aggressive timelines in order to be ready for the test events,” she told media.

“Rio is entering the most intense period of preparations. A period where Rio must reach a new level of detail.”

Most of the Olympic test events will be held in the second half of this year, including the equestrian cross country and golf.

El Moutawakel’s remarks come a day after IOC president Thomas Bach said he was “satisfied” with the state of preparations.

The Games, to be held from Aug 5-21 next year, will be the first Olympics in South America.

Sunil Gavaskar gives his opinion of GT allrounder Rahul Tewatia

The left-handed batsman from Haryana is garnering praise from all quarters for the way he’s finishing games regularly in the most exciting IPL season.

Gavaskar reckons Tewatia’s whirlwind knock in Sharjah (in IPL 2020) where he smashed West Indies pacer Sheldon Cottrell for five sixes in an over, gave him the confidence that he belongs to the big stage.

Speaking on Cricket Live on Star Sports, Gavaskar said, “That assault on Sheldon Cottrell in Sharjah gave him the belief to do the impossible and the confidence that he belongs here. We saw the impossible (he did with the bat) the other day as well. There’s no twitching or touching the pads (which shows a batter’s nervousness) when he bats in the death overs. He just waits for the ball to be delivered and plays his shots. He’s got all the shots in the book, but most importantly his temperament to stay cool in a crisis is brilliant.”

Gavaskar has also nicknamed the 28-year-old cricketer the ‘ice-man’ and lauded Tewatia’s ability to remain unruffled during the tense moments.
