Team India superstitions ‘Totka’ for winning the World Cup
Gaurav Chhabra (Sports Desk)
Superstitions have never been new to cricket and keeping in mind Indian team has made a great comeback in this World Cup tournament and have won all the three matches played till now including two against formidable opponents i.e Pakistan and South Africa, many would believe there might be some connection.
There is a strange superstition followed by the Indian players in this World Cup and it would be interesting to know if this tradition carries on in the upcoming matches.
It started with Dhawan who changed his hairstyle before the first match which India won against Pakistan promptly followed by Virat Kohli who changed his hair style similar to Dhawan in the match against South Africa.
If Viran and Dhawan did something how could Raina be far behind! Raina got his new hairstyle before their match against UAE. It seems all of the three have got a similar hairstyle before each match they played in the World Cup.
Superstitions are not new in Cricket and when India won the World Cup in 2011 it was Dhoni who got bald after winning the cup. There have been other instances in the cricketing field that have been seen and followed by various cricketers.
Among some of the key players of Sri Lanka Lasith Malinga has the superstition of kissing the ball before he bowls the delivery and their key batsmen Mahela Jayawardane has the habit of kissing the bat when he plays in the field.
Recently while Harbhajan Singh was at a reality show he said that he was very much superstitious regarding the supporter he used to wear in the Test series against the Australians in which he took 32 wickets. It is one of the best performances by an Indian Bowler against the Australians, Harbhajan wore that same supporter for the entire series.
Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni considers his luck to be mentored by number ‘7’. His jersey number is 7 and perfumes by name “7 are some of the examples. Dhoni was born on the seventh of the seventh month i.e July 7.
Dale Steyn one of the key player of South Africa has a unique habit of stepping onto the field with his left foot first and with his eyes looking up to the sky.
The great Australian ex-skipper Steve Waugh was famous for keeping a red cloth in his pocket when he was on the field. There was another unique example that is of late David Shepherd who was considered to be a brilliant umpire, he used to hop on every time the score was on nelson – 111 or multiples thereof.
