Kapil Dev’s ‘Devils’ and what they are up to in the lockdown.
India’s World Cup winners of 1983 stuck in lock down
The lock down has got everyone doing something different which they normally wouldn’t have done and flaunting it on social media in style. So, how could Kapil Dev’s ‘Devils’ not participate in this trend? The team which lifted the 1983 cricket World Cup is now busy spending time trying their hand at new looks and experimenting with new hairstyles. While the captain was the first to take the plunge by shaving his head and sharing a picture with his team, the others happily followed suit and decided to share their ‘current looks’ in a time when they cannot meet each other personally.
02/11 Kapil Dev
The 1983 World Cup-winning captain, who has for years charmed his fans with his trademark salt and pepper look, recently decided to go bald and even share it with the world. The always-clean-shaven Kapil Dev has now shaved his head for a change and is sporting quite a smart beard too. Some Twitter users even spotted a Vivian Richards in that look! Do you see it too?
03/11 Sunil Gavaskar
One of India’s legendary cricketers of all time, Sunil Gavaskar has over the years managed to maintain his ‘look’ — neatly combed hair, clean-shaven and a formal dress code, mostly with a tie to go with. But now for once, Sunny has decided to let his facial hair be and is sporting a grey beard.
04/11 Sandeep Patil
A hard-hitting middle-order batsman and occasionally a medium pace bowler, former cricketer Sandeep Patil now flaunts a grey French beard and a head full of black hair with just a streak of grey on the side.
05/11 Syed Kirmani
When the first pictures of Kapil Dev with his bald look came out, several fans likened him with his teammate Syed Kirmani. The 1983 World Cup’s star wicketkeeper shared a picture of his current look with his teammates wherein he could be seen flaunting huge black headphones, besides his aged beard and his usual shaved head.
06/11 Dilip Vengsarkar
Dilip Vengsarkar, who recently celebrated his 64th birthday, is busy penning his memoirs amid the lockdown. I have got in touch with a statistician and hope to finish it soon,” the former India captain and chief selector told Mirror.
07/11 Balwinder Sandhu
Sandhu, who made his mark in the 1983 World Cup with his fierce inswingers, is now resting at his abode with a black and red checkered turban and completely grey beard. Because Sandhu had always sported a salt and pepper look, Dilip Vengsarkar now doubts that he has been dying his beard all along. All in good humour, of course.
08/11 Madan Lal
Madan Lal won the hearts of millions of Indians when he had sent Vivian Richards walking back towards the pavilion with his brilliant throw. While most of his teammates opted for selfies to share with their friends, Madan Lal was rather dressed up in a blue shirt and a stylish hat and flaunted his handsome moustache in the picture.
09/11 Roger Binny
The first Anglo-Indian to play cricket for India, all-rounder Roger Binny was the highest wicket-taker in the 1983 World Cup series with 18 wickets. Looks like the lockdown hasn’t stopped him from sweating it out in the open as he shared a picture of himself posing in the sweltering heat in a casual t-shirt and a cap.
10/11 Kirti Azad
Another student from the class of 83, Kirti Azad shared a picture of himself in a blue tee, unruly salt and pepper hair and an untrimmed beard. The cricketer-turned-politician is currently busy creating awareness about the COVID-19 pandemic and has been urging people to wear masks and follow the precautionary measures laid out by the government. He, along with his wife Poonam Azad, has also launched a helpline number and has asked people to call them if in need during the lockdown.
11/11 Yashpal Sharma
Yashpal Sharma has got some of his finest moments from the 1983 World Cup, wherein he scored a fantastic 89 runs in the opening match itself as India caused West Indies their first defeat in a World Cup match. Going by his latest photo, he looks the youngest among all his teammates with a head full of black back-combed hair and a red-and-white shirt.

Sunil Gavaskar gives his opinion of GT allrounder Rahul Tewatia
The left-handed batsman from Haryana is garnering praise from all quarters for the way he’s finishing games regularly in the most exciting IPL season.
Gavaskar reckons Tewatia’s whirlwind knock in Sharjah (in IPL 2020) where he smashed West Indies pacer Sheldon Cottrell for five sixes in an over, gave him the confidence that he belongs to the big stage.
Speaking on Cricket Live on Star Sports, Gavaskar said, “That assault on Sheldon Cottrell in Sharjah gave him the belief to do the impossible and the confidence that he belongs here. We saw the impossible (he did with the bat) the other day as well. There’s no twitching or touching the pads (which shows a batter’s nervousness) when he bats in the death overs. He just waits for the ball to be delivered and plays his shots. He’s got all the shots in the book, but most importantly his temperament to stay cool in a crisis is brilliant.”
Gavaskar has also nicknamed the 28-year-old cricketer the ‘ice-man’ and lauded Tewatia’s ability to remain unruffled during the tense moments.
