Melbourne: Spaniard Roberto Merhi will make his Formula 1 debut this weekend at the Australian Grand Prix after being confirmed as Marussia’s second driver for the “opening rounds” of the 2015 season.

Merhi has previous experience of F1, having driven for Caterham in three practice sessions in 2014. The 23-years-old has won the 2011 European Formula 3 crown and finished third in last year’s Formula Renault 3.5 championship.

“I am incredibly excited to be making my Formula 1 debut in Melbourne this weekend. It is a big responsibility but I feel ready to make this step in my career and to show that I can make an important contribution to developing a team,” Merhi said.

Briton Will Stevens is the other Marussia driver.

Alongside Merhi, Marussia announced 21-year-old Briton Jordan King as their new development driver.

“I am obviously over the moon to be joining Marussia as a development driver. This is such an exciting project, full of great people and with a real chance of success. This is another great step closer to my ultimate goal of racing in Formula 1,” said King.

Sunil Gavaskar gives his opinion of GT allrounder Rahul Tewatia

The left-handed batsman from Haryana is garnering praise from all quarters for the way he’s finishing games regularly in the most exciting IPL season.

Gavaskar reckons Tewatia’s whirlwind knock in Sharjah (in IPL 2020) where he smashed West Indies pacer Sheldon Cottrell for five sixes in an over, gave him the confidence that he belongs to the big stage.

Speaking on Cricket Live on Star Sports, Gavaskar said, “That assault on Sheldon Cottrell in Sharjah gave him the belief to do the impossible and the confidence that he belongs here. We saw the impossible (he did with the bat) the other day as well. There’s no twitching or touching the pads (which shows a batter’s nervousness) when he bats in the death overs. He just waits for the ball to be delivered and plays his shots. He’s got all the shots in the book, but most importantly his temperament to stay cool in a crisis is brilliant.”

Gavaskar has also nicknamed the 28-year-old cricketer the ‘ice-man’ and lauded Tewatia’s ability to remain unruffled during the tense moments.
