Sale of passenger vehicles shot up for sixth straight month
Passenger vehicle sales increased for the sixth straight month in January as pent-up demand, sustained preference for personal mobility drive up wholesale volumes.
According to data available with industry body Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), as many as 276,554 passenger vehicles were sold last month, which is an increase of 11.14% over 248,840 units sold in the year-ago period.
The growth would have been even higher at 16% if we were to include sales of Tata Motors which has stopped reporting data to SIAM on a monthly basis.
Sales of two-wheelers went up 6.63% in the month under review. While sales of scooters rose 9% to 454,315 units, those of motorcycles went up 5.1% to 916,365 units. Demand for three-wheelers continued to remain muted and fell by 56.8% to 25,335 units in January.
With the numbers of vehicles on road increasing on a daily basis, India also stands as number one country in terms of death in road accidents ahead of China and USA. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has emphasized on reducing fatal accidents on roads in the country.
