Cricket World Cup 2015

Gaurav Chhabra (Sports Desk)

Cricket World Cup 2015 has just completed the pool phase and the teams have advanced to the quarterfinals of the tournament. Now the players who have shined in the games till now will be in the eyes of the fans to propel their team’s fortunes.

Lets talk of the run getters first.

Its SA vs Sri Lanka in the quarters and the way the old horse Sangakkara is performing must be giving sleepless nights to the chokers. Kumar Sangakkara is the leading run-scorer till now in the World Cup 2015. The veteran south paw who can shame any young turk by his phenomenal skills has piled 496 runs in this World Cup with four tons in a row.

Though Zimbabwe is en route home now, Brendan Taylor  has outshone the big names like Kohli, Gayle and Amla. Taylor has amassed 433 runs till now in this tournament. Widely regarded as the game changer and the best batsmen of ODI, the protean skipper A.B. de Villiers is the third in the list with 417 runs. Fans expect him to climb the ladder with the last eight stage. But the Proteans have to face the Lankans in the quarters and apart from Sangakkara, Tillakaratne Dilshan with 395 runs and fourth in the list of top run getters till now can be a major hurdle.

Surprisingly, the Indians who have such big names, don’t find a place in the top five run getters. However, their quarter finals opponent Bangladesh is teasing them here. Mahmudullah with 344 runs is asking questions to the likes of Kohli, Shikhar and Rohit.

Now the bowlers. Australians are known to hit the track hard and on their home pitches.Mitchell Starc is on the top spot among the wicket takers till now with 16 to his name. India has a reason to smile here. Mohammed Shami with 15 wickets is jointly behind Staarc with New Zealander Trent Boult who also has 15 wickets with the best figures of 5/27.

Now here comes the shocker in the bowling list as well, Josh Davey (Scotland) has 15 wickets to his name. He also joins Shami and Boult but sadly the team is no more in fray so it’s just Shami and Boult who could come close to Staarc. Pakistan has made an amazing comeback and now face the Aussies in the Quarters and they can rely on Wahab Riaz who has 14 wickets against his name.
