No Place is Safe for Women in India
Lucknow: May be the incident of ghastly Delhi rape case has been vanishing from the mind of people and their tears may be dried up but the question is still the same. Are women safe in India?
The number of rape cases registered in India is around 33,707 during 2012-14. Every day a new story of crime against women is heard or more specifically over heard. It is not only Delhi which is highlighted, if we look on the reports of Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana etc all have almost the same figures of crime against women.
Recently, a brutality has reached its peak when a 72-year old nun was allegedly gang-raped by seven men triggered protests and outrage across the nation. UNICEF has investigated that in India more than 7,200 children are raped every year including toddlers. Underage victims who do report the culprits are often subjected to ill-treatment and humiliation from the police. Rape is not only the single crime against women but also molestation, Domestic violence, Trafficking, foeticide and many more add to the list.
Sometimes concerns about women’s safety are uttered in a way of protectiveness however it changes to the situation of violence which takes the form of restricting mobility, choice and freedom. Facts speak for the situation. Home, often trusted to be a “safe haven” if women, is the biggest scene of crime against women.
India is categorized as one of the ‘extreme risk’ countries for trafficking children. According to the latest survey, almost 85 percent of women in the capital felt unsafe and feared being sexually harassed. Women now feel more vulnerable while travelling in a bus, waiting at the bus stop, walking on the streets and in market places.
Decreasing sex ratio and crimes against women is now an alarm for the country to open their eyes and face the truth. Society doesn’t change only with the changes in laws but we have to change our mind set as well.
Parents have to teach their children that women are not lower in position and they have equal rights and power as men, accepting it that without woman a child cannot be brought into the world.
In order to make our nation violence-free, we should start creating the world in which we would live independently and would feel our children comfortable to get into it.
