Litmus test for Kohli, adieu Sanga
Skipper Virat Kohli has all guns blazing as he leads the team on his first full tour to Sri Lanka. Virat looks exuberant and unmindful of his own recent form which is good for team India.
The selectors, directors and coaches have their plans but this Delhi lad has always had his own way and aggression is integral to his game plan and approach. He is the boss and has made his intentions very clear before the start of the series and is expected to take some bold decisions on his own in the upcoming tour to Sri Lanka.
Since Dhoni left the captaincy, Kohli has been the one to face media and has been the centre of attraction for the people to write and interpret about his leading the team for the Lanka’s tour.
However, things look apparent as he will be the one to take hold of the crucial number 3 slot and might play five bowlers after he has hinted that he could even go in with three spinners.
Two key batsmen Cheteshwar Pujara and Rohit Sharma have been in brilliant form and look apt for the number three slot if Kohli decides to experiment to regain his own touch.
With solid defense from Cheteshwar Pujara and sheer timing from Rohit Sharma, followed by some class shots by Kohli, it would be a treat for the test cricket lovers if these batsmen get going on the Lankan pitches.
However, the strategies need to be in place. If Rohit bats down the order, he can capitalize on a good start by the openers. With his one dayers experience, Sharma can also be a good choice to open the innings. The series will be a real test for Sharma who despite unquestioned talent, has not lived up to expectations in the five dayers.
Another person to watch out for is Ajinkya Rahane. He is a cool customer who has has the caliber of delivering the unexpected. He is the one who can be the next ‘Wall’ of Indian cricket if he delivers as per his potentials.
Wriddhiman Saha will most probably seen at No.6 will have to concentrate more on his batting. He is pretty much faultless with his gloves but has to work a mile before he gets somewhere near Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s class as a batsman.
Kohli might promote Ashwin up in the batting order with the kind of performance and experience he has with batting and can turn out to be the bowling all rounder for the Indian team. Harbhajan Singh should make it to the playing eleven giving Ashwin strength and experience in the bowling arena.
Kohli’s plans for flat pitches are very much clear to go with his five-batsmen-three-spinners theory on the subcontinent pitches. And it would be a real assessment for the Kohli and his team to show the temperament against the very strong Sri Lankan team with home support.
While this series would be keenly watched by ardent fans on both sides, but it will be remembered for just one criketer. Kumar Sanggakara will bid adieu to cricket in this series and with that an era would come to an end.

Sunil Gavaskar gives his opinion of GT allrounder Rahul Tewatia
The left-handed batsman from Haryana is garnering praise from all quarters for the way he’s finishing games regularly in the most exciting IPL season.
Gavaskar reckons Tewatia’s whirlwind knock in Sharjah (in IPL 2020) where he smashed West Indies pacer Sheldon Cottrell for five sixes in an over, gave him the confidence that he belongs to the big stage.
Speaking on Cricket Live on Star Sports, Gavaskar said, “That assault on Sheldon Cottrell in Sharjah gave him the belief to do the impossible and the confidence that he belongs here. We saw the impossible (he did with the bat) the other day as well. There’s no twitching or touching the pads (which shows a batter’s nervousness) when he bats in the death overs. He just waits for the ball to be delivered and plays his shots. He’s got all the shots in the book, but most importantly his temperament to stay cool in a crisis is brilliant.”
Gavaskar has also nicknamed the 28-year-old cricketer the ‘ice-man’ and lauded Tewatia’s ability to remain unruffled during the tense moments.
