Rio de Janeiro: Flamengo struck three first-half goals to defeat 10-man Atletico Paranaense 3-2 in Brazil’s Serie A championship.

The result in Wednesday’s match at the Maracana stadium lifted Flamengo to 11th in the standings with 23 points while Atletico Paranaense dropped to seventh, reported a news agency.

Wallace, Emerson Sheik and Alan Patrick scored for the hosts, whose first-half dominance was only fleetingly halted by Hernani’s 25th-minute header for Atletico.

Kadu reduced the deficit just after the hour mark for the visitors, but they were reduced to 10 men minutes later when Hernani was shown his second yellow card for a bad foul.

In Florianopolis, former AC Milan striker Alexandre Pato was on target in Sao Paulo’s 2-0 victory over Figueirense.

The victory took Sao Paulo to third in the standings, six points behind leaders Corinthians, who needed a late goal from Jadson to see off Sport 4-3.

In other matches on Wednesday, Coritiba defeated Palmeiras 2-1, Chapecoense held Goias 0-0, Santos overcame Vasco da Gama 1-0 and Internacional beat Fluminense 1-0.

Sunil Gavaskar gives his opinion of GT allrounder Rahul Tewatia

The left-handed batsman from Haryana is garnering praise from all quarters for the way he’s finishing games regularly in the most exciting IPL season.

Gavaskar reckons Tewatia’s whirlwind knock in Sharjah (in IPL 2020) where he smashed West Indies pacer Sheldon Cottrell for five sixes in an over, gave him the confidence that he belongs to the big stage.

Speaking on Cricket Live on Star Sports, Gavaskar said, “That assault on Sheldon Cottrell in Sharjah gave him the belief to do the impossible and the confidence that he belongs here. We saw the impossible (he did with the bat) the other day as well. There’s no twitching or touching the pads (which shows a batter’s nervousness) when he bats in the death overs. He just waits for the ball to be delivered and plays his shots. He’s got all the shots in the book, but most importantly his temperament to stay cool in a crisis is brilliant.”

Gavaskar has also nicknamed the 28-year-old cricketer the ‘ice-man’ and lauded Tewatia’s ability to remain unruffled during the tense moments.
