Court orders Maradona to pay for slander victim’s legal fees
Buenos Aires: Famed Argentine ex-footballer Diego Maradona must pay the legal expenses of Shanghai Shenhua team coach Sergio Batista for alleging he took bribes from national players, an Argentine court has ruled.
The ruling by a criminal court in the capital here called for Maradona to pay Batista’s legal team 39,000 pesos (about 4,600 dollars), judicial sources said Tuesday, as per reports.
Batista, 52, coached Argentina’s national team from Nov 2, 2010, after Maradona’s departure, until July 25, 2011, when the team was eliminated in the quarter-final round of the Copa America championship hosted by Argentina.
Shortly after that loss in September 2011, Maradona said Batista “had bribes arranged” with football players who wanted to play on the national team, regardless of their level of play.
Batista, who was Maradona’s teammate in two World Cups (Mexico 1986, which they won, and Italy 1990, in which they took second place), sued the outspoken former national team captain.
Maradona later publicly retracted his statement and the suit was dropped, but the remained.

Sunil Gavaskar gives his opinion of GT allrounder Rahul Tewatia
The left-handed batsman from Haryana is garnering praise from all quarters for the way he’s finishing games regularly in the most exciting IPL season.
Gavaskar reckons Tewatia’s whirlwind knock in Sharjah (in IPL 2020) where he smashed West Indies pacer Sheldon Cottrell for five sixes in an over, gave him the confidence that he belongs to the big stage.
Speaking on Cricket Live on Star Sports, Gavaskar said, “That assault on Sheldon Cottrell in Sharjah gave him the belief to do the impossible and the confidence that he belongs here. We saw the impossible (he did with the bat) the other day as well. There’s no twitching or touching the pads (which shows a batter’s nervousness) when he bats in the death overs. He just waits for the ball to be delivered and plays his shots. He’s got all the shots in the book, but most importantly his temperament to stay cool in a crisis is brilliant.”
Gavaskar has also nicknamed the 28-year-old cricketer the ‘ice-man’ and lauded Tewatia’s ability to remain unruffled during the tense moments.
