Juventus eliminate Monchengladbach from Champions League
Monchengladbach: Ten-man Juventus held Borussia Monchengladbach to a 1-1 draw to eliminate the German side from the group stage in a fourth round match of the Champions League.
Group D front-runners Juventus ended Monchengladbach’s hope to progress into the last 16 after a 1-1 draw on the road. The hosts grabbed the lead through Fabian Johnson before Stephan Lichtensteiner’s equaliser for Juventus silenced the Borussia-Park stadium, reports on Tuesday.
Juventus played the last 37 minutes with ten-men but Monchengladbach failed to take advantage.
Borussia needed a win to stay in the competition and they thus grabbed the reins against surprisingly offensive-minded visitors from Italy. Monchengladbach came close to break the deadlock with just 13 minutes into the game but Mahmoud Dahoud’s long-range effort rattled only the woodwork.
Dahou’s chance was a wakening call for the hosts, who opened the scoring five minutes later. Raffael capitalised on a loose ball inside the box to assist Fabian Johnson, whose shot from the inside right beat Ginaluigi Buffon into the far post corner.
Borussia continued to threat, as Buffon had to deny Ibrahima Traore’s header with a tip over the bar. The Italian veteran custodian was again in the thick of things moments later after defusing Havard Nordtveit’s powerful low shot.
Juventus gained a foothold into the game slowly to shock the hosts with the equaliser just before the break. Paul Pogba assisted with a pinpoint lob into the path of unmarked Stephan Lichtensteiner, who hammered the volley past Monchengladbach’s goalkeeper Yann Sommer with a minute remaining in the first half.
After the restart, Juventus nearly turned the tides but neither Leonardo Bonucci nor Alvaro Morata were able to beat Sommer with their headers on target. The visitors suffered a setback with 53 minutes into the game as Hernanes saw a straight red card for a foul play to Alvaro Dominguez.
However, despite having superior number on the pitch, Borusssia failed to overcome Buffon for the second time. The Juventus goalkeeper was on guard to defuse Lars Stindl’s and Thorgan Hazard’s efforts, securing his side one point on the road.
With the result, Monchengladbach crashed out of the group stage with two points from four games. Juventus slipped to the second place in the table with 8 points from four matches.

Sunil Gavaskar gives his opinion of GT allrounder Rahul Tewatia
The left-handed batsman from Haryana is garnering praise from all quarters for the way he’s finishing games regularly in the most exciting IPL season.
Gavaskar reckons Tewatia’s whirlwind knock in Sharjah (in IPL 2020) where he smashed West Indies pacer Sheldon Cottrell for five sixes in an over, gave him the confidence that he belongs to the big stage.
Speaking on Cricket Live on Star Sports, Gavaskar said, “That assault on Sheldon Cottrell in Sharjah gave him the belief to do the impossible and the confidence that he belongs here. We saw the impossible (he did with the bat) the other day as well. There’s no twitching or touching the pads (which shows a batter’s nervousness) when he bats in the death overs. He just waits for the ball to be delivered and plays his shots. He’s got all the shots in the book, but most importantly his temperament to stay cool in a crisis is brilliant.”
Gavaskar has also nicknamed the 28-year-old cricketer the ‘ice-man’ and lauded Tewatia’s ability to remain unruffled during the tense moments.
