Women’s Hockey: India registers 5-0 win against Scotland
Stellenbosch (South Africa): Keeping the winning streak alive, the Indian women’s hockey team thrashed Scotland by 5-0 on the South Africa tour.
The first period of the match on Thursday started with India looking for an early goal but the Scottish defence refused to give them any clear shot at the goal. Scotland tried to gain the upper hand in the second quarter but India refused to give away ball possession and the first half ended goalless.
The third quarter started with India looking determined to score. The breakthrough came in the 37th minute from a penalty shot conversion by Rani who soon made it 2-0 for India with another penalty corner conversion (42nd minute). Deepika made it 3-0 (45th) through a field goal.
India continued the momentum into the last quarter of the game with Anuradha Devi Thokchom scoring the fourth goal in the 54th minute. Gurjit Kaur registered the fifth from a penalty corner (59th) to establish a strong win for India.
The tour started with India defeating South Africa 1-0 in Cape Town on February 20. India then drew 2-2 against the hosts. The visiting team then defeated the junior South African team 3-1 and then 8-0 in two back-to-back matches before taking on Scotland.
They will next play two matches against Germany on February 27 and 28 before playing one more game against Scotland on March 1.

Sunil Gavaskar gives his opinion of GT allrounder Rahul Tewatia
The left-handed batsman from Haryana is garnering praise from all quarters for the way he’s finishing games regularly in the most exciting IPL season.
Gavaskar reckons Tewatia’s whirlwind knock in Sharjah (in IPL 2020) where he smashed West Indies pacer Sheldon Cottrell for five sixes in an over, gave him the confidence that he belongs to the big stage.
Speaking on Cricket Live on Star Sports, Gavaskar said, “That assault on Sheldon Cottrell in Sharjah gave him the belief to do the impossible and the confidence that he belongs here. We saw the impossible (he did with the bat) the other day as well. There’s no twitching or touching the pads (which shows a batter’s nervousness) when he bats in the death overs. He just waits for the ball to be delivered and plays his shots. He’s got all the shots in the book, but most importantly his temperament to stay cool in a crisis is brilliant.”
Gavaskar has also nicknamed the 28-year-old cricketer the ‘ice-man’ and lauded Tewatia’s ability to remain unruffled during the tense moments.
