On top of his game, Virat Kohi has achieved so much and holding a number of international records, it is hard to believe that he is just eight years into his career. Now what makes him stand apart from the rest. He is already being compared to his idol Sachin Tendulkar. Brian Lara, the batting great of his era has already termed him as the ‘best placer’ of the cricket ball. Sunil Gavaskar has termed him without any doubt, as the best batsman in the world currently

Hammering an unbeaten 82 off 51 balls while the rest of his colleagues looked like they would much rather be somewhere else, he has further consolidated his position as a batsman like no other in limited overs format. His gritty innings that was played superbly under pressure also saw him become the number one T20 batsman in the world, replacing Aaron Finch.

His terrific knock has sparked off comparisons with the likes Tendulkar and Brian Lara. Former India captain, Sourav Ganguly, said Kohli was a better chaser than Tendulkar while Ian Chappell, the hard-nosed former captain of Australia, reckoned Kohli’s ball placement was better than Lara, the great West Indian stylist.

One knock and two of the most level-headed commentators of the game draw parallels with two of the greatest batsmen in the modern era . Looking at statistics gives a clearer picture of his accomplishments in the cricketing world.

  • 83 Virat Kohli’s average in successful run-chases in T20Is – he has scored 737 runs with nine not-outs, at a strike rate of 131. In all run-chases he averages 91.80, at a strike rate of 132.65. His unbeaten 82 here is also his highest when batting second.
  • 918 Runs for Kohli in run-chases, the second highest among all batsmen in T20I. Only Brendon McCullum has scored more, but his 1006 runs came in 38 innings, compared to Kohli’s 918 in 19. Among batsmen with at least 300 runs in chases, his average is easily the highest.
  • 83– Kohli’s T20I average against Australia: he has scored 401 runs in nine innings, with three not-outs. In chases against Australia, he averaged 33 in four innings before today; after this game, that average has gone up to 53.50. Kohli’s aggregate of 401 is the second best by any batsman against one team in T20Is, next only to Martin Guptill’s 424 in ten innings against South Africa.

Tendulkar debuted when Kohli was barely a year old – today Sachin feels Kohli’s is the one who would go on to break his record of 100 international hundreds.

Rohit Sharma debuted for India way before Kohli and Yuvraj Singh was an established star when Kohli walked into the dressing-room. Shikhar Dhawan was a superstar in Delhi as Kohli watched on with starry eyes. Suresh Raina was a limited-overs star before Kohli made a name for himself in the international arena.

Kohli has surpassed all of them. None of these players ever drew comparisons with Tendulkar. Not many around the world did. For you to be spoken of in the same breath as Tendulkar and Lara that is as big as it gets for any batsman.

It’s scary to think of the damage Kohli would do to bowling attacks around the world in the years to come. He will score many many more runs in all formats of the game. That is a given.

Years to come he will only get better and let’s see if he can break the Tendulkar barrier of 100 international hundreds.

The State Scores Extra High on Gaming-Friendly Industry Index

Meghalaya scored 92.85 out of 100 possible points in a Gaming Industry Index and proved to be India’s most gaming-friendly state following its recent profound legislation changes over the field allowing land-based and online gaming, including games of chance, under a licensing regime.

The index by the UK India Business Council (UKIBC) uses a scale of 0 to 100 to measure the level of legalisation on gambling and betting achieved by a state based on the scores over a set of seven different games – lottery, horse racing, betting on sports, poker, rummy, casino and fantasy sports

Starting from February last year, Meghalaya became the third state in India’s northeast to legalise gambling and betting after Sikkim and Nagaland. After consultations with the UKIBC, the state proceeded with the adoption of the Meghalaya Regulation of Gaming Act, 2021 and the nullification of the Meghalaya Prevention of Gambling Act, 1970. Subsequently in December, the Meghalaya Regulation of Gaming Rules, 2021 were notified and came into force.

All for the Tourists

The move to legalise and license various forms of offline and online betting and gambling in Meghalaya is aimed at boosting tourism and creating jobs, and altogether raising taxation revenues for the northeastern state. At the same time, the opportunities to bet and gamble legally will be reserved only for tourists and visitors.

“We came out with a Gaming Act and subsequently framed the Regulation of Gaming Rules, 2021. The government will accordingly issue licenses to operate games of skill and chance, both online and offline,” said James P. K. Sangma, Meghalaya State Law and Taxation Minister speaking in the capital city of Shillong. “But the legalized gambling and gaming will only be for tourists and not residents of Meghalaya,” he continued.

To be allowed to play, tourists and people visiting the state for work or business purposes will have to prove their non-resident status by presenting appropriate documents, in a process similar to a bank KYC (Know Your Customer) procedure.

Meghalaya Reaches Out to a Vast Market

With 140 millions of people in India estimated to bet regularly on sports, and a total of 370 million desi bettors around prominent sporting events, as per data from one of the latest reports by Esse N Videri, Meghalaya is set to reach out and take a piece of a vast market.

Estimates on the financial value of India’s sports betting market, combined across all types of offline channels and online sports and cricket predictions and betting platforms, speak about amounts between $130 and $150 billion (roughly between ₹9.7 and ₹11.5 lakh crore).

Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Delhi are shown to deliver the highest number of bettors and Meghalaya can count on substantial tourists flow from their betting circles. The sports betting communities of Karnataka, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana are also not to be underestimated.

Among the sports, cricket is most popular, registering 68 percent of the total bet count analyzed by Esse N Videri. Football takes second position with 11 percent of the bets, followed by betting on FIFA at 7 percent and on eCricket at 5 percent. The last position in the Top 5 of popular sports for betting in India is taken by tennis with 3 percent of the bet count.

Local Citizens will Still have Their Teer Betting

Meghalaya residents will still be permitted to participate in teer betting over arrow-shooting results. Teer is a traditional method of gambling, somewhat similar to a lottery draw, and held under the rules of the Meghalaya Regulation of the Game of Arrow Shooting and the Sale of Teer Tickets Act, 2018.

Teer includes bettors wagering on the number of arrows that reach the target which is placed about 50 meters away from a team of 20 archers positioned in a semicircle.

The archers shoot volleys of arrows at the target for ten minutes, and players place their bets choosing a number between 0 and 99 trying to guess the last two digits of the number of arrows that successfully pierce the target.

If, for example, the number of hits is 256, anyone who has bet on 56 wins an amount eight times bigger than their wager.
