Pele thanks fans for ‘gratifying’ support, leaves hospital
Rio de Janeiro: Pele has thanked his legion of fans from around the world after being discharged from a Brazilian hospital.
The 74-year-old said Tuesday he drew strength from the messages of support during his two weeks at Sao Paulo’s Albert Einstein Hospital, as per reports.
“I would like to thank all friends that have sent me messages and were worried about me,” Pele said.
“It was something I was not expecting, but I was not afraid to die. I’ve had messages from China, Pak
istan, from almost all the European countries.”
“It is gratifying and good to know that I had the support of so many people around the world who were hoping the situation improved.”
Pele was admitted to the hospital Nov 24 after being diagnosed with a urinary tract infection. After originally being treated with antibiotics, he was transferred to intensive care and placed on dialysis to help support his only kidney.
He said he is now looking forward to the Olympic Games, which will host in 2016.
Regarded by many as the greatest footballer of all times, Pele played in Brazil’s 1958, 1962 and 1970 World Cup-winning teams.
The left-handed batsman from Haryana is garnering praise from all quarters for the way he’s finishing games regularly in the most exciting IPL season.
Gavaskar reckons Tewatia’s whirlwind knock in Sharjah (in IPL 2020) where he smashed West Indies pacer Sheldon Cottrell for five sixes in an over, gave him the confidence that he belongs to the big stage.
Speaking on Cricket Live on Star Sports, Gavaskar said, “That assault on Sheldon Cottrell in Sharjah gave him the belief to do the impossible and the confidence that he belongs here. We saw the impossible (he did with the bat) the other day as well. There’s no twitching or touching the pads (which shows a batter’s nervousness) when he bats in the death overs. He just waits for the ball to be delivered and plays his shots. He’s got all the shots in the book, but most importantly his temperament to stay cool in a crisis is brilliant.”
Gavaskar has also nicknamed the 28-year-old cricketer the ‘ice-man’ and lauded Tewatia’s ability to remain unruffled during the tense moments.
