How to clean car windshield
There are times that no matter how well you clean the windshield and glass with a glass cleaner, that dirt and grime won’t budge! A dirty windshield is not only unsafe, it detracts from the look of your freshly detailed car or truck. This article will teach you how to clean your windshield and glass, leaving it so clear it may look as if the glass is invisible!
- Find the right cleaning solution.
Every car nerd has their favorite brand or formula from ammonia-based glass cleaners to TSP or simply soap and water. If you choose to use ammonia, be careful not to spill it on any vinyl, leather or rubber your vehicle may have. Keep in mind that ammonia is very harmful to a variety of materials. Ammonia can also be hazardous to your health, so be wary of using it on the interior of you car. Spray-bottle glass cleaners are the most popular solution.
- Wash the windshield with water before adding the cleaning solution.
Scrub water in straight lines with a soft brush. Only use horizontal or vertical motions; there’s no need to scrub too hard because you’re only doing an initial wash to loosen the grime up.
- Add the glass-cleaning solution.
Spray the cleaner to one side of a towel. A microfiber towel is best if you have one, and begin cleaning. Use long broad strokes and work from one side to the other for a cleaner, clearer result. It doesn’t take long, but giving that extra attention to detail can make a real difference in how well you can see out of your windshield. If residue remains after the first run, do it again until you get it right.
- Allow the windshield to thoroughly dry.
- Prevent dirty windshields in the first place.
Make sure your wiper fluid is full and that your blades are in working order. Blades need to be replaced once every 2 to 3 years. If there is some buildup on the wiper blade itself, try wiping the blade down with rubbing alcohol or mineral spirits. The angle of the blade is also important. Adjust the arm of your windshield wiper to about 70 degrees (versus a straight vertical 90 degree arm). If your wipers are really dirty, scrub them down with baking soda and water.
