Uber installs meters in cabs to comply with Karnataka rules
US-based ride hailing service Uber has installed physical meters in a hundred cabs in Bengaluru, its second largest market in India, as it looks to score a license under the new rules for taxi aggregators in the state.
The move to install these digital meters is in stark contrast to its model of delivering its service exclusively via mobile apps.
Karnataka had mandated under its On-Demand Transportation Technology Aggregators Rules that players such as Uber and Ola should follow a cap on fares fixed by the state, end surge pricing, install digital meters, fix taxi boards atop cabs and maintain a physical ledger in cabs that operate on their platforms.
The state, which Uber has taken to court over the rules, has mandated that a minimum of 100 cabs should be compliant in order for taxi aggregators to apply for a licence to operate in the state. The second hearing for the case is scheduled to take place on June 20, before which the company was hoping to complete the license application process.
