Pain of periods is something hard to resist. When any woman goes from her periods she actually goes from hell. Many women stay all day long in their beds when they have periods. While some of them take pain killers in order to digest their pain.
In fact, Dr Duru Shah, Director, Gynaecworld Center for Assisted Reproduction & Women’s health tells us that there are also a lot of myths associated with painful periods that stop mothers from taking their daughters to a gynecologist and start her on a treatment for the same. Some believe that period pains are normal while others believe that period pains are inherited so nothing can be done.
Today, we will tell you about reasons behind painful periods
1 Ovulation
Ovulation is a release of eggs from ovaries. When a woman releases an egg she may have a painful period, yet all women who ovulate, do not necessarily get painful periods. Period’s pain can be prevented by taking the oral contraceptive pill (OCP) which prevents ovulation and hence prevents the pain.
2 Cervical Spasm
When a woman is on her periods she faces several pains but the most terrible pain is the pain of cervix. Cervix is a mouth of the uterus is very tight. During periods, the menstrual blood is pushed out of the uterus. After a normal delivery, the mouth of the uterus gets stretched to allow the baby to pass. Such pain disappears after a normal delivery, but not after a planned Caesarean delivery.
3 Fibroids
These are benign tumours of the uterus which occur in almost 1 out of 4 women around 40 yrs of age. If they are present in the muscle or cavity of the uterus they can cause severe pain during periods. Removal of the fibroids gives instant relief.
4 Endometriosis and Adenomyosis
In this condition, woman not only bleeds from vagina but also from the muscles of uterus. The pressure of the blood building up inside the body causes severe pain, which gets worse month after month. Surgery is the best treatment option for the permanent relief otherwise there are some specific medications for temporary relief.
5 Pelvic Inflammatory Disease
In this condition, woman faces severe pain in the pelvis. It leads to painful periods, infertility and painful intercourse. The treatment again is surgical for permanent relief.
