Pain of periods is something hard to resist. When any woman goes from her periods she actually goes from hell. Many women stay all day long in their beds when they have periods.  While some of them take pain killers in order to digest their pain.

In fact, Dr Duru Shah, Director, Gynaecworld Center for Assisted Reproduction & Women’s health tells us that there are also a lot of myths associated with painful periods that stop mothers from taking their daughters to a gynecologist and start her on a treatment for the same. Some believe that period pains are normal while others believe that period pains are inherited so nothing can be done.

Today, we will tell you about reasons behind painful periods

1 Ovulation

Ovulation is a release of eggs from ovaries. When a woman releases an egg she may have a painful period, yet all women who ovulate, do not necessarily get painful periods. Period’s pain can be prevented by taking the oral contraceptive pill (OCP) which prevents ovulation and hence prevents the pain.

2 Cervical Spasm

When a woman is on her periods she faces several pains but the most terrible pain is the pain of cervix. Cervix is a mouth of the uterus is very tight. During periods, the menstrual blood is pushed out of the uterus. After a normal delivery, the mouth of the uterus gets stretched to allow the baby to pass. Such pain disappears after a normal delivery, but not after a planned Caesarean delivery.

3 Fibroids

These are benign tumours of the uterus which occur in almost 1 out of 4 women around 40 yrs of age. If they are present in the muscle or cavity of the uterus they can cause severe pain during periods. Removal of the fibroids gives instant relief.

4 Endometriosis and Adenomyosis

In this condition, woman not only bleeds from vagina but also from the muscles of uterus.  The pressure of the blood building up inside the body causes severe pain, which gets worse month after month. Surgery is the best treatment option for the permanent relief otherwise there are some specific medications for temporary relief.

5 Pelvic Inflammatory Disease

In this condition, woman faces severe pain in the pelvis. It leads to painful periods, infertility and painful intercourse. The treatment again is surgical for permanent relief.

Covid toll in Karnataka is a worrying sign for state government

Even though Karnataka recorded the lowest number of Covid deaths in April since the virus struck first in 2020, the state is recording a rise in the positivity rate (1.50 per cent). Five people died from the Covid infections in April as per the statistics released by the state health department. In March, the positivity rate stood around 0.53 per cent. In the first week of April it came down to 0.38 per cent, second week registered 0.56 per cent, third week it rose to 0.79 per cent and by end of April the Covid positivity rate touched 1.19 per cent.

Health experts said that the mutated Coronavirus is losing its fierce characteristics as vaccination, better treatment facilities and awareness among the people have contributed to the lesser number of Covid deaths.

During the 4th and 6th of April two deaths were reported in Bengaluru, one in Gadag district on April 8, two deaths were reported from Belagavi and Vijayapura on April 30. The first Covid case was reported in the state in March 2020 and three Covid deaths were recorded in the month.
