Bollywood actor Sonali Bendre has revealed through an Instagram post that she has been diagnosed with high-grade cancer that had metastasized. Bendre, who has been a part of many hit Bollywood films like Hum Saath Saath Hain, Sarfarosh and Kal Ho Na Ho, posted a picture with her husband Goldie Behl, accompanied by a long caption that discussed how she got to know about the disease and the treatment. She has been undergoing in New York and gratitude towards her family and loved ones who have stood by her side.

What is High–grade cancer?

A term used to describe cells and tissue that look abnormal under a microscope. High-grade cancer cells tend to grow and spread more quickly than low-grade cancercells. Cancer grade may be used to help plan treatment and determine prognosis.

Is it curable?

A cancer is said to be in stage 4 of cancer when it has spread far away from the origin into other organs of the body, this progression is also known as metastasis and unless a metastasis is singular—meaning that it has only spread in to one specific location—and it’s still accessible, it usually means that the cancer .

Local growth and damage to nearby tissues

Cancer cells multiply quickly. A cancerous (malignant) tumour is a lump or growth of tissue made up from cancer cells. Cancerous tumours normally first develop in one site – the primary tumour. However, to get larger, a tumour has to develop a blood supply to obtain oxygen and nourishment for the new and dividing cells. In fact, a tumour would not grow bigger than the size of a pinhead if it did not also develop a blood supply. Cancer cells make chemicals that stimulate tiny blood vessels to grow around them which branch off from the existing blood vessels. This ability for cancer cells to stimulate blood vessels to grow is called angiogenesis.

The actress said she is currently undergoing treatment in New York and is supported by friends and family. The main reason the ‘high grade’ cancer is dangerous and needs is its ability to spread quickly to other parts of the body. According to Cancer.Net, metastasis is the medical term for cancer that spreads to a different part of the body from where it started. Metastasis is also known as ‘metastatic cancer’ or ‘stage 4 cancer’.
