You cannot ask students to forcefully vacate the hostels amid Covid surge: Karnataka Deputy CM

The government of Karnataka has issued an order to all the schools and universities stating that they cannot ask students to forcefully vacate the hostels during the current Covid-19 surge across the state, said Deputy Chief Minister Dr. C N Ashwath Narayan.

He issued a statement on Twitter, saying that students will not be asked to vacate the hostels and return home forcefully by the educational institutes till the examinations for the current academic session are concluded.

He wrote on Twitter, “Students who are residing in hostels and pursuing Engineering, Diploma, Polytechnic, UG & PG examinations should not be forcefully vacated from the respective college hostels. Instead, all facilities including food should be continued until the examinations are completed.”

Many universities and colleges have been asking students to return home as many cases have been reported in educational institutes in recent weeks. Students have been protesting this move as travelling during the pandemic is unsafe and inconvenient.

Karnataka schools, colleges closed

The government of Karnataka, in view of the spike in Covid-19 cases across the state, shut down all the schools, colleges, and universities for the safety of the students. The educational institutes are to remain closed till further notice.

Even though all the educational institutes in the state have been shut down as per government order, the classes for students are set to continue in online mode. The decision to shut down all the educational institutes in Karnataka was made on April 20.

The education department of Karnataka had further decided that the board exams for the students of classes 10 and 12 will be conducted as per the official schedule, despite the postponement of several state board exams this year.

The Karnataka board exams are set to be conducted in offline mode this year. After the postponement of the CBSE Class 12 board exams, many students were pushing for the deferment of the Karnataka board exams, but the government has decided to conduct them according to the date sheet.

Covid toll in Karnataka is a worrying sign for state government

Even though Karnataka recorded the lowest number of Covid deaths in April since the virus struck first in 2020, the state is recording a rise in the positivity rate (1.50 per cent). Five people died from the Covid infections in April as per the statistics released by the state health department. In March, the positivity rate stood around 0.53 per cent. In the first week of April it came down to 0.38 per cent, second week registered 0.56 per cent, third week it rose to 0.79 per cent and by end of April the Covid positivity rate touched 1.19 per cent.
