Engineering students orphaned due to Covid-19 will be given free coaching and accommodation in Kota announces, Om Birla

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has announced that the students who are preparing for engineering or medical entrance tests and have been orphaned due to the Covid-19 pandemic will be provided with free coaching and accommodation in Kota.

Several states across the country have taken measures to ensure that people who have lost parents or family members due to the pandemic have enough support and financial aid for all the necessary resources such as education and healthcare.

Mr Birla, the MP from Kota — a major coaching hub for competitive examination preparations in the country — held a meeting with the directors of coaching institutes in the city and requested them to come forward to help the needy in these challenging times, his office said in a statement.

As per reports, around 1.5 to 2 lakh students go to Kota every year and take admissions to coaching institutes in hopes of securing a rank in the IIT JEE exam or NEET exam. Now, students who have suffered due to the pandemic will also get the chance to go to the coaching hub and prepare for the exams.

Covid-19 relief fund for families

At the request of Speaker Om Birla, the institutes agreed to provide free coaching, accommodation, and food to students from across the country who have lost their parents or earning members of the family due to Covid-19, the statement said.

During the meeting with Mr Birla, Director of Allen Career Institute, Naveen Maheshwari also announced that the institute will set up a relief fund of Rs 50 lakh to help the families affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.

While making the announcement for free coaching and accommodation, Mr Birla thanked the coaching institutions for their noble gesture and said during these challenging times it is important that society comes together and helps each other.

In recent news, the state governments of Madhya Pradesh, Delhi, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha have come forward to offer free education and study stipends to students who have lost their parents or legal guardians to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Covid toll in Karnataka is a worrying sign for state government

Even though Karnataka recorded the lowest number of Covid deaths in April since the virus struck first in 2020, the state is recording a rise in the positivity rate (1.50 per cent). Five people died from the Covid infections in April as per the statistics released by the state health department. In March, the positivity rate stood around 0.53 per cent. In the first week of April it came down to 0.38 per cent, second week registered 0.56 per cent, third week it rose to 0.79 per cent and by end of April the Covid positivity rate touched 1.19 per cent.
