Atletico coach Simeone on verge of extending contract
Madrid: Spanish football club Atletico Madrid are expected to announce a new contract for coach Diego Simeone in the coming hours.
The new deal, which was revealed by the coach’s sister in the wake of Atletico’s Champions League triumph over Bayer Leverkusen on Tuesday, is expected to take the former player through to the end of June 2021, although there is a buyout clause that either club or coach can use at the end of each season, as per reports.
Former Argentina player, Simeone has been a huge success as Atletico Madrid coach. Arriving at the end of 2011, he guided the club to the 2012 Europa League and 2013 Copa del Rey titles.
Atletico won the La Liga title in 2013-14 and Simeone also led them to the final of the Champions League where only an injury time goal from Real Madrid’s Sergio Ramos denied them a famous double.
Atletico got their revenge at the start of this season by beating Real Madrid in the Super Cup as well as beating them twice in La Liga and knocking their neighbours out of this season’s Copa del Rey.
They are currently in fourth place in the league and Tuesday’s win took them into the last eight of the Champions League.

Sunil Gavaskar gives his opinion of GT allrounder Rahul Tewatia
The left-handed batsman from Haryana is garnering praise from all quarters for the way he’s finishing games regularly in the most exciting IPL season.
Gavaskar reckons Tewatia’s whirlwind knock in Sharjah (in IPL 2020) where he smashed West Indies pacer Sheldon Cottrell for five sixes in an over, gave him the confidence that he belongs to the big stage.
Speaking on Cricket Live on Star Sports, Gavaskar said, “That assault on Sheldon Cottrell in Sharjah gave him the belief to do the impossible and the confidence that he belongs here. We saw the impossible (he did with the bat) the other day as well. There’s no twitching or touching the pads (which shows a batter’s nervousness) when he bats in the death overs. He just waits for the ball to be delivered and plays his shots. He’s got all the shots in the book, but most importantly his temperament to stay cool in a crisis is brilliant.”
Gavaskar has also nicknamed the 28-year-old cricketer the ‘ice-man’ and lauded Tewatia’s ability to remain unruffled during the tense moments.
