La Liga title reward for a fantastic season: Barcelona’s Pique
Barcelona: FC Barcelona defender Gerard Pique believes the La Liga title is a just reward for his side after a brilliant 2014-15 season.
Luis Enrique’s men beat arch-rivals Atletico Madrid 1-0 at the Vincente Calderon stadium on Sunday owing to a strike from Argentine forward Lionel Messi in the second half to clinch the trophy.
“It’s been a fantastic year. We’ve stood tall and the reward has been this title,” Pique was quoted as saying by goal.com on Monday.
“It was a difficult year last season, but the team showed we could pick ourselves up. I am very proud to be a part of this great generation of players at Barcelona,” he said.
The Catalan giants are now a step closer to a treble this season as they are set to face Athletic Club Bilbao in the Copa del Rey final on May 30 before meeting Juventus in the Champions League decider on June 6.
However, Pique feels there is still a lot of football to be played before they can achieve the feat.
“We have to take each game at a time and now we need to focus on the cup final, which will be very tough. We are on the way but there’s still work to be done,” the Spain international added.
The left-handed batsman from Haryana is garnering praise from all quarters for the way he’s finishing games regularly in the most exciting IPL season.
Gavaskar reckons Tewatia’s whirlwind knock in Sharjah (in IPL 2020) where he smashed West Indies pacer Sheldon Cottrell for five sixes in an over, gave him the confidence that he belongs to the big stage.
Speaking on Cricket Live on Star Sports, Gavaskar said, “That assault on Sheldon Cottrell in Sharjah gave him the belief to do the impossible and the confidence that he belongs here. We saw the impossible (he did with the bat) the other day as well. There’s no twitching or touching the pads (which shows a batter’s nervousness) when he bats in the death overs. He just waits for the ball to be delivered and plays his shots. He’s got all the shots in the book, but most importantly his temperament to stay cool in a crisis is brilliant.”
Gavaskar has also nicknamed the 28-year-old cricketer the ‘ice-man’ and lauded Tewatia’s ability to remain unruffled during the tense moments.
