Madrid: Real Madrid sacked coach Carlo Ancelotti after two years in charge of the team on Monday, a media report said on Tuesday.

The news was given by club President, Florentino Perez at a press conference held at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium which followed a meeting of the club’s Board of Directors, as per reported.

Ancelotti leaves the Bernabeu after a season in which he led the club to the European Supercup and the World Club Championship, but where Real Madrid finished second to FC Barcelona in the BBVA Primera Liga, were knocked out of the King’s Cup by neighbours Atletico Madrid and lost to Juventus in the semi-finals of the Champions League.

“Real Madrid has the highest demands and we think the moment has come to give a new impulse to the season,” said Perez, who said Ancelotti’s replacement would be confirmed next week.

“We make this reflection every season after the season,” added Perez. “We looked at things from all points of view, but if we are convinced we need to make a new impulse, then the decision was clear,” he said.

The Italian’s first season at the club saw him lead Real Madrid to the long desired ‘Decima’: the tenth Champions League title in the club’s history, as well as the King’s Cup after defeating Barcelona in the final.

Despite those successes, Ancelotti’s sacking had been expected ever since the Champions League exit, although some players, such as Cristiano Ronaldo had made it very clear they wanted the coach to continue.

Ronaldo posted a message on social network site ‘Twitter’ after Saturday’s 7-3 home win to Getafe saying he “hoped to work, ” with Ancelotti next season.

“We will have the change to discuss the issue with them in the future,” said Perez.

Real Madrid fans also appear to be unconvinced by the sacking of the coach who had been lauded as a peace-maker after bringing apparent calm to the club following Jose Mourinho’s three turbulent years in charge and polls held by Spain’s sporting press all showed a majority wanting him to continue.

When speaking to the press following what was his last game in charge Ancelotti had commented that his options were either to continue at the Real Madrid or to enjoy a year’s sabbatical.

Former Valencia, Liverpool and current Napoli coach, Rafa Bentiez, who earlier in his career coached in the Real Madrid youth system is now the favorite to be named as Ancelotti’s replacement.

Sunil Gavaskar gives his opinion of GT allrounder Rahul Tewatia

The left-handed batsman from Haryana is garnering praise from all quarters for the way he’s finishing games regularly in the most exciting IPL season.

Gavaskar reckons Tewatia’s whirlwind knock in Sharjah (in IPL 2020) where he smashed West Indies pacer Sheldon Cottrell for five sixes in an over, gave him the confidence that he belongs to the big stage.

Speaking on Cricket Live on Star Sports, Gavaskar said, “That assault on Sheldon Cottrell in Sharjah gave him the belief to do the impossible and the confidence that he belongs here. We saw the impossible (he did with the bat) the other day as well. There’s no twitching or touching the pads (which shows a batter’s nervousness) when he bats in the death overs. He just waits for the ball to be delivered and plays his shots. He’s got all the shots in the book, but most importantly his temperament to stay cool in a crisis is brilliant.”

Gavaskar has also nicknamed the 28-year-old cricketer the ‘ice-man’ and lauded Tewatia’s ability to remain unruffled during the tense moments.
