Messi is in unbeatable shape: Argentina coach Martino
Santiago: Argentina coach Gerardo Martino on Saturday said his star striker Lionel Messi is in unbeatable shape for the Copa America.
Messi is fresh after playing a instrumental role for Barcelona in winning the treble — La Liga, the Copa del Rey and European Champions League. The The 27-year-old is now solely focussed on Argentina and winning the Copa America.
“This year, by contrast, he has won everything. He comes here fresh from securing those three titles and he was in superlative form throughout the season. He is in unbeatable shape,” Martino was quoted as saying by goal.com.
“Last year he arrived at the World Cup without winning any titles and this year he heads into the Copa America having won three and he has been key in those, playing above his usual level,” he said.
Asked about Argentina’s change in style since he took over from Alejandro Sabella after the World Cup, Martino added: “The footballers play a big part in that and it is their ability to execute those ideas that have helped us.
“I believe we have consolidated and reinforced those beliefs. And on top of that, we have the best player in the world.”
Argentina open their campaign against Paraguay on saturday.

Sunil Gavaskar gives his opinion of GT allrounder Rahul Tewatia
The left-handed batsman from Haryana is garnering praise from all quarters for the way he’s finishing games regularly in the most exciting IPL season.
Gavaskar reckons Tewatia’s whirlwind knock in Sharjah (in IPL 2020) where he smashed West Indies pacer Sheldon Cottrell for five sixes in an over, gave him the confidence that he belongs to the big stage.
Speaking on Cricket Live on Star Sports, Gavaskar said, “That assault on Sheldon Cottrell in Sharjah gave him the belief to do the impossible and the confidence that he belongs here. We saw the impossible (he did with the bat) the other day as well. There’s no twitching or touching the pads (which shows a batter’s nervousness) when he bats in the death overs. He just waits for the ball to be delivered and plays his shots. He’s got all the shots in the book, but most importantly his temperament to stay cool in a crisis is brilliant.”
Gavaskar has also nicknamed the 28-year-old cricketer the ‘ice-man’ and lauded Tewatia’s ability to remain unruffled during the tense moments.
