Indian golfers Atwal, Rashid tied 15th in Manila Masters

Manila: Indian golfers Arjun Atwal and Rashid Khan shared the 15th position after the second round of the $1 million Manila Masters at the par-72 Manila Southwoods Golf and Country Club here Friday.

Atwal, who scored 72 Thursday, carded four-under 68 while Rashid added 71 to his first round score of 69. Himmat Rai, who scored 68 in the first round, settled for a par score to share 29th position with 11 others, including Shiv Kapur. Shiv hit one-over 73.

South Korean teenager Wang Jeung-hun fired a sizzling seven-under 65 to share the top spot with overnight leader Mardan Mamat of Singapore. Mamat scored 68 to take his total to 11-under 133. The 19-year-old Wang nailed nine birdies against two bogeys to score 65.

Hung Chien-yao of Chinese Taipei, Malaysia’s Nicholas Fung and Japan’s Daisuke Kataoka, who was the co-overnight leader, were amongst those sharing sixth place on 138.

Reigning Asian Tour Order of Merit champion Kiradech Aphibarnrat of Thailand was two shots back in third place following a 69 while Malaysia’s Danny Chia and Englishman Steve Lewton shared fourth on 137.

Other Indians in the fray, Chiragh Kumar and Rahil Gangjee shared 41st place along with six others golfers.

Veteran golfer Jeev Milkha Singh scored three-under 69 to make the cut, which fell at 145. Jeev had scored 76 in the first round.

However, Jyoti Randhawa failed to make cut as he scored a total of 147 (72, 75).

Sunil Gavaskar gives his opinion of GT allrounder Rahul Tewatia

The left-handed batsman from Haryana is garnering praise from all quarters for the way he’s finishing games regularly in the most exciting IPL season.

Gavaskar reckons Tewatia’s whirlwind knock in Sharjah (in IPL 2020) where he smashed West Indies pacer Sheldon Cottrell for five sixes in an over, gave him the confidence that he belongs to the big stage.

Speaking on Cricket Live on Star Sports, Gavaskar said, “That assault on Sheldon Cottrell in Sharjah gave him the belief to do the impossible and the confidence that he belongs here. We saw the impossible (he did with the bat) the other day as well. There’s no twitching or touching the pads (which shows a batter’s nervousness) when he bats in the death overs. He just waits for the ball to be delivered and plays his shots. He’s got all the shots in the book, but most importantly his temperament to stay cool in a crisis is brilliant.”

Gavaskar has also nicknamed the 28-year-old cricketer the ‘ice-man’ and lauded Tewatia’s ability to remain unruffled during the tense moments.
