Elano vows Santos return

Rio de Janeiro: Former Brazil international midfielder Elano has vowed to return to Santos as he prepares to rejoin Chennaiyin FC.

Elano is tied to Santos until next June but a clause in his contract has allowed Chennaiyin to sign the 34-year-old on loan for the three-month Indian Super League season, reported a news agency.

He will make his last 2015 appearance for Santos in their round-of-16 Copa do Brasil clash against Corinthians on Wednesday.

“I want to make it clear that I’m not leaving Santos,” Elano said on Tuesday.

“I signed a contract (with Chennaiyin) without knowing if I’d return to Santos. I’m sad about that. It’s an important time for the club but at the same time I know the team is in good hands.”

Santos are currently 12th in the 20-team Brazilian Serie A standings at the season’s midway point.

Elano was the leading scorer in the Indian Super League’s first season last year with eight goals despite missing several games through injury.

Capped 50 times for Brazil, the former Manchester City player has won six trophies in three separate spells at Santos.

Sunil Gavaskar gives his opinion of GT allrounder Rahul Tewatia

The left-handed batsman from Haryana is garnering praise from all quarters for the way he’s finishing games regularly in the most exciting IPL season.

Gavaskar reckons Tewatia’s whirlwind knock in Sharjah (in IPL 2020) where he smashed West Indies pacer Sheldon Cottrell for five sixes in an over, gave him the confidence that he belongs to the big stage.

Speaking on Cricket Live on Star Sports, Gavaskar said, “That assault on Sheldon Cottrell in Sharjah gave him the belief to do the impossible and the confidence that he belongs here. We saw the impossible (he did with the bat) the other day as well. There’s no twitching or touching the pads (which shows a batter’s nervousness) when he bats in the death overs. He just waits for the ball to be delivered and plays his shots. He’s got all the shots in the book, but most importantly his temperament to stay cool in a crisis is brilliant.”

Gavaskar has also nicknamed the 28-year-old cricketer the ‘ice-man’ and lauded Tewatia’s ability to remain unruffled during the tense moments.
