BCCI to use treated sewage water for IPL
MUMBAI: Extending a helping hand to the Maharashtra government, The BCCI on Tuesday told Bombay high court that it will use treated sewage water to maintain the grounds for the IPL matches left to be played in Mumbai and Pune this year.
A bench of Justice V M Kanade and Justice M S Karnik were informed by senior advocate Rafiq Dada that it requested the Royal Western India Turf Club to provide water from its sewage treatment plant at the Mahalaxmi racecourse.
Also it informed the board about plans of the franchise Kings XI Punjab, which intends to shift its entire matches out of Nagpur. Nine matches are to be played in Pune and eight in Mumbai.
An estimated 10 lakh litres of water is required to maintain grounds for one game at each venue in the IPL.
The court had during an earlier hearing had asked the cricket board whether the people in are important or the IPL. It also criticized the BCCI for wasting water to prepare pitches for the forthcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket tournament, at a time when several parts of the state, including Thane, are facing an acute shortage.
The court had also directed the state government to commission an inquiry and find out whether water supplied for maintaining pitches for the matches is potable or non-potable.
It had also sought to know what immediate steps the state intends to take to tackle water scarcity and if it will import water from other states.
