Medical admissions in Lucknow stopped amidst protests

Lucknow: Agitating post graduate (PG) medical students stalled admissions through revised merit list of Uttar Pradesh Postgraduate Medical Entrance Exam (UPPGMEE) 2016 at King George’s Medical University (KGMU) for the second consecutive day on Saturday.

The PG students are protesting against state government’s decision to cancel their admissions done on May 1 and hold fresh admissions on the basis of new merit list drawn following Supreme Court’s (SC) interim order of 30% additional marks weightage to Provincial Medical Health Services (PMHS) doctors who have served in rural areas. While agitating students want government to wait for the final hearing of their review petition, PMHS candidates blamed the government for not providing them adequate security for smooth running of the counselling.

The matter concerns around 330 MBBS students who had been allotted MD/MS/diploma seats in medical colleges of the state through UPPGMEE held in March. Admissions were completed on the basis of the first merit list between April 4 to April 8. Those admitted also started working from May 1.

 However, PMHS candidates approached the apex court requesting incentive for those who have served in rural areas. The incentive, they said, would help in strengthening rural health services. The SC on May 12 directed state government to provide additional marks, maximum up to 30%, to PHMS candidates depending on the period of service in the rural areas.
Medical education department subsequently cancelled the old merit list and admissions on May 26. The revised merit list declared on May 27 based on new parameter pushed out many candidates without rural experience selected earlier.
Dr VN Tripathi, Director General Medical Education, said “We are talking to protesting students and trying to persuade them for getting at least partial counselling done. Their anger is justified, but stalling the process under the SC order will not help. We are hopeful of getting the counselling done in the next two days.”

As many as six new nursing colleges to be functional in Haryana soon

Haryana Chief Secretary Sanjeev Kaushal shared that the construction work of six nursing colleges in the state will be completed soon and classes will commence in the month of July. Not only this, the new building of the National Institute of Fashion Technology, Panchkula has also completed its construction work.

Adding on to this, he shared that, till now, the classes are being held in another building, the chief secretary said while presiding over the review meeting of development projects worth more than Rs 100 crore here.

CHIEF SECRETARY REVIEWED MAJOR PROJECTS

The Chief Secretary reviewed several major projects, including power, health, medical, and technical education in the state, and directed the concerned officials to complete them within the stipulated time period.

COLLEGES UNDER CONSTRUCTION

He said that the construction of nursing colleges in Dherdu village of Kaithal, Khedi Ram Nagar village of Kurukshetra, Kheranwali village of Panchkula, Aura and Dayalpur village of Faridabad, and Sadatpur village of Rewari is under construction.

The construction work of Medical college in Koriawas in Narnaul, Medical College at Jind, Bhiwani, and Dental College at Nalhar is being completed at a fast pace. The work of the second phase of Kalpana Chawla Medical College is also undergoing.
