Excellent defence propelled France

France and Romania face off in the first match of Euro 2016 and it was a match that lived up to its hype. For quite a few spells in the game, it looked like the hosts’ opening woes would continue but Dimitri Payet came in and showed why he was chosen ahead of the highly rated Manchester United forward, Anthony Martial.

Romania were no pushovers during the game and pushed hard. There were a couple of close opportunities too and it was the Men in Yellow who threatened in the first half. Bogdan Stancu shot from close range and Hugo Lloris made an excellent save.

There were more attacks and France left space between the lines; a better opponent would have made them pay. The centre back pairing of Adil Rami and Laurent Koscielny also had little coordination between them and look like they always had a mistake in them.

France settled down later in the half and chances were coming thick and fast. Antoine Griezmann, earmarked as one of the teams of the tournament latched on to an inch-perfect cross from Paul Pogba and took a first time shot; the ball bounced off the Romanian defenders and the ball lobbed up in the air. The Atletico Madrid winger thumped the ball into the post.

Sunil Gavaskar gives his opinion of GT allrounder Rahul Tewatia

The left-handed batsman from Haryana is garnering praise from all quarters for the way he’s finishing games regularly in the most exciting IPL season.

Gavaskar reckons Tewatia’s whirlwind knock in Sharjah (in IPL 2020) where he smashed West Indies pacer Sheldon Cottrell for five sixes in an over, gave him the confidence that he belongs to the big stage.

Speaking on Cricket Live on Star Sports, Gavaskar said, “That assault on Sheldon Cottrell in Sharjah gave him the belief to do the impossible and the confidence that he belongs here. We saw the impossible (he did with the bat) the other day as well. There’s no twitching or touching the pads (which shows a batter’s nervousness) when he bats in the death overs. He just waits for the ball to be delivered and plays his shots. He’s got all the shots in the book, but most importantly his temperament to stay cool in a crisis is brilliant.”

Gavaskar has also nicknamed the 28-year-old cricketer the ‘ice-man’ and lauded Tewatia’s ability to remain unruffled during the tense moments.
